IND vs SA: Dean Elgar Set To Retire After India vs South Africa Test Series

South Africa stalwart Dean Elgar has announced that he will retire from international cricket after the forthcoming IND vs SA Test series. Dean Elgar is a former South Africa Test skipper who has represented the team only in the Test format for the last few years.

Dean Elgar is part of the South Africa squad that will tackle India in the forthcoming two-match Test series. Notably, the left-handed batsman played a key role in driving South Africa to 2-1 victory against India in the previous home series in January 2022. He was also the skipper of the team during that series.

Had The Privilege To Represent My Country For 12 Years: Dean Elgar

In his official press release for retirement, Dean Elgar said that he was happy to have to privilege to represent the country for 12 years.

“Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have”, the South Africa opener said.

The 36-year-old also added that he is happy to end his career at Newlands in Cape Town, which is his favourite stadium.

“As they say, ‘all good things come to an end’, and the Indian home series will be my last, as I have made the decision to retire from our beautiful game. A game that has given me so much”.

“The Cape Town Test will be my last. My favourite stadium in the world. A place I scored my first Test run against New Zealand and hopefully my last too”, Dean Elgar said.

Dean Elgar Played 84 Tests For South Africa

Dean Elgar made his debut for South Africa in August 2012, when he faced England in an ODI encounter. He played 84 Tests for South Africa over the years, smacking 5146 runs at an average of 37.02.

Elgar also shattered 13 tons and 53 centuries in Tests. He took over the Test captaincy in 2017. Elgar had a flourishing career in Tests. However, his ODI career was not equally remarkable. He played only 8 ODIs for South Africa, hitting 104 runs across 7 innings.

Rohit Sharma Will Be Back To Lead India In Test Series

Meanwhile, India and South Africa will face each other in two Tests in the ongoing India tour of South Africa 2023. The IND vs SA 1st Test begins on Tuesday, December 26 at SuperSport Park in Centuries. The 2nd Test begins on January 3 at Newlands in Cape Town.

Rohit Sharma will be back in the Indian team to lead the team in IND vs SA Test series. Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa. Recently, stand-in skipper KL Rahul led the Indian team to 2-1 victory in the ODI series. Before that, the T20I series between both sides ended in a 1-1 tie.
