Voice of cricket Harsha Bhogle recently picked his ODI team of the year 2023. What caught the attention of many was that Harsha Bhogle didn’t pick Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the team.

Harsha Bhogle picked the Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as the two openers in his team. The duo was instrumental in India’s success this year in the 50-over format and was one of the main reasons why the team reached the final of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shubman Gill ended 2023 as the leading run-getter in the ODIs this year. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma took the opposition to the cleaners in the powerplay and captained the team brilliantly.

At No.3, Harsha Bhogle picked the kingpin of the Indian batting lineup in Virat Kohli. The batter was at his best in the ODIs this year and piled up truckloads of runs. His best came during the ICC World Cup 2023, where he ended as the leading run-getter with 765 runs to his name.

South Africa’s Aiden Markram made the cut into Harsha Bhogle’s ODI XI of the year. The right-hander played great knocks for his team this year and ended with 1033 runs to his name. He also chipped in with the ball as well and contributed significantly to his team.

Harsha Bhogle backed Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan to be the keeper in his team. The right-hander was the leading run-getter for Pakistan in ODIs this year. He ended 2023 with 1023 runs to his name from 25 matches that he played this year. Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 927 runs, also got picked in the commentator’s ODI XI.

Ravindra Jadeja is the only all-rounder picked by Harsha Bhogle in his ODI XI of the year. The all-rounder picked 31 wickets and also contributed equally well with the bat for his team. Kuldeep Yadav will partner him in the spin bowling department in the team.

The wrist-spinner was the leading wicket-taker in the ODIs in 2023. He took 49 wickets in the 30 matches that he played and put his team in a winning position. Bhogle then picked Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shaheen Afridi as three pacers in his team.

Mohammed Siraj picked 44 wickets in ODIs this year whereas Shami bagged 43 scalps in just 19 games. Shaheen, on the other hand, picked 42 scalps. The pace trio were threatening for their respective teams and were one of the main reasons behind their team’s success.

Jasprit Bumrah, whom Harsha Bhogle didn’t pick, bagged 28 wickets in the 17 games that he played. His best came during the World Cup and with the kind of caliber that he possesses, it was surprising that he wasn’t picked by Harsha Bhogle. The pacer, however, was injured for the majority of the year.
