Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 left fans and cricket enthusiasts in awe as he scored a brilliant 82 runs against Sri Lanka. However, in the post-match press conference, the inevitable question arose about his missed century and whether he and his teammates discussed the frustration of coming close to individual milestones. In response, Shreyas provided a thoughtful perspective on the team’s priorities and his approach to the game.

Shreyas Iyer’s knock of 82 runs was undoubtedly a crucial contribution to the Indian team’s success, but it fell short of the coveted century mark. When asked about this near-miss, he emphasized the importance of playing for the team on such a grand stage. He acknowledged that discussions about missing out on centuries or half-centuries do occur within the team, but he swiftly shifted the focus to the team’s goals and the necessity of adapting to the game’s demands.

Shreyas Iyer’s response exemplified his selflessness and commitment to the team’s cause. He highlighted the need to confront challenging situations, such as batting in the late overs against formidable bowlers, with the intent of putting the team’s interests ahead of individual achievements. He explained that while he was batting well and in control, he happened to miss a delivery that was slightly outside his body, and credit was given to the skillful bowling of Sri Lankan pacer Madhushanka.

“See this is the stage where you play for the team, you don’t play for your individual performance. Yeah, we definitely discuss missing out on centuries or half centuries but going forward, say you’re put in the same situation, I have to go against the bowlers right? If I’m batting in the 47th or 48th over,” said Iyer.

Iyer went on to commend Madhushanka for his exceptional performance, particularly in the early overs of the match, where he exhibited control and variation in his pace, keeping the Indian batsmen on their toes. It was a testament to the Sri Lankan bowler’s smart tactics and adaptability on the field.

I was sighting the ball pretty well it’s just that I missed out on that particular ball, it was a little away from my body and Madhushanka was bowling brilliantly. The way he bowled with the new ball and also he came in varying his pace, bowling slower ones here and there and bowled smart,” Shreyas Iyer added.

The talented cricketer also acknowledged that they discuss their performances as a team, reflecting on what could have been done differently to achieve personal milestones. However, he maintained a positive outlook and stressed that there were more matches to come in the tournament. With determination and perseverance, he expressed his hope to convert near-centuries into centuries in the upcoming games.

He stated, “Yeah talking about our performances- we definitely discuss and few balls here and there and I could’ve got to a hundred but nonetheless there are a few more matches to come and hopefully I’ll be able to get one.”

Shreyas Iyer’s words resonate with the spirit of team cricket, where individual accomplishments are celebrated, but the ultimate goal remains the success of the team. His mature and team-oriented approach is a testament to the values and sportsmanship that make cricket a beloved and revered sport, not just for the players but for fans around the world. As the Cricket World Cup 2023 continues, fans eagerly await more exceptional performances and memorable moments on the field.
