Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli survived a few close calls during his innings on Day 1 of the second Test. The Indian batter was unbeaten on 20 when Tea was called on the opening day of the second Test in Cape Town. India were on 111/4.
India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the third over of their innings. Rohit Sharma played a counter-attacking knock of 36 off 50 balls before he too fell to Nandre Burger. Shubman Gill who was looking good on 36 also fell to Burger as he edged him off to slips. Both the catches were caught by Marco Jansen.
Virat Kohli started his innings with an early boundary. He hit a few crisp shots to get his innings underway. In between he survived a few close calls before the tea break. Meanwhile, just before tea, India lost the wicket of Shreyas Iyer for a duck as he too edged one from Nandre Burger.
In the 24th over of the Indian innings, Kohli was struck down on the leg side by Marco Jansen. The umpire overturned the appeal and Dean Elgar the South African skipper took the DRS.
As it turned out, the replays showed that it was the umpire’s call and the decision by umpire Ahsan Raza was upheld. Kohli surviving a few close calls started agitating the South African fielders.
Dean Elgar could not restrict himself from taking a dig at Kohli saying that he was lucky to survive a few close calls. “Oh you’ve survived a close one,” said Elgar when Kohli was given not out against Marco Jansen.

Kohli was quick and prompt with his response reminding him that Elgar was far more luckier with his close calls against Ravichandran Ashwin from the 2021 series.

“Oh please this was much higher than what you got from Ash in 2021” came the response from Kohli.
South Africa are leading the series 1-0 and Dean Elgar so far has had a big part to play in the lead. His knock of 185 in the first Test turned out to be the difference between the two teams. Elgar is also South Africa’s sixth-highest run-getter in Test cricket. Only six South African batters have scored more than 6000 Test runs and Elgar closely follows the list on the eighth position. He is on 5335 runs in 86 Test matches at an average of 37.84.
In the pre-match presser ahead of the second Test, Elgar said that winning a Test series against India is similar to a World Cup win for him. He wants them to adopt a mindset that this is a series they should not share because it will be played at home and with the final match at many of the players.
“We are in a fortunate position knowing that we can’t lose the series but drawing is maybe as big as a loss for us. It’s a massive Test for us, being our highlighted Test of the year. The New Year’s Test at Newlands, they don’t get much bigger and better, against really tough opposition. Playing the New Year’s Test is big for guys and they are going to have a lot of firsts so we want them to just live in that moment but be mindful of the opportunity of winning 2-nil. Drawing the series is not something we are thinking about at all.” Elgar asked during the pre-match press conference.
