Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka sounded dejected after his team was rolled over by India by 10 wickets in the final of the Asia Cup 2023. They were bowled out for 50 as India chased the target down in 6.1 overs.
In the process, Sri Lanka were completely outplayed and India won their eighth Asia Cup title. The Lankan side looked rusty and their batters did not apply themselves in front of a terrific spell from Mohammed Siraj.
Kusal Mendis top-scored with 17 in the game as nine-battes scored single-digit scores including five ducks. The Lankas won a tight game against Pakistan which was a virtual semi-final in the lead-up to the final but came second in the final.
Shanaka addressed the post-match presentation by congratulating India on their win and had words of wisdom for Mohammed Siraj.
“It was an outstanding bowling display from Siraj. I thought it’ll be a good pitch for batters, but overcast conditions played a part. Tough day for us at the office. We could’ve tightened our technique, and would’ve helped batters to settle in and free their arms later,” said Shanaka to start his interaction.
He further credited a few of his players for the way they played in this tournament. He took the names of Charith Asalanka, Kusal Perera and Sadeera Samarawickrama terming them as future superstars.
“Lots of positives. The way Sadeera and Kusal batted against spin, Also the way Asalanka batted. These three will score heavily in good batting conditions in India. We know how to bounce back from tough situations. We came into the final beating good sides. It’s a big plus,” Shaka added further.
Sorry about the fact we disappointed you: Dasun Shanaka apologizes to fans
He concluded by thanking the crowd for coming in large numbers to support the Sri Lankan team and apologized for losing the big final.
“Players will continue good cricket from the last couple of years. I would like to thank supporters who came in numbers. Sorry about the fact we disappointed you. Still thanks for the great support. And congrats to the Indian team,” Shanaka concluded saying.
