Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra pointed out Ishan Kishan’s struggle against Bangladesh in the last Super Four game of the Asia Cup 2023. He highlighted how the batter tried to do something difficult after he failed to rotate the strike in the middle.
India suffered a disappointing 6-run loss against Bangladesh on Friday (15th September). Their middle-order batters didn’t perform well as they failed to chase the target of 266 runs. Ishan Kishan, in particular, looked off-color as he didn’t look comfortable against spinners.
Ishan Kishan got stuck on the crease as he failed to rotate the strike and ended up putting pressure on his batting partner Shubman Gill. The keeper batter scored 5 runs off 15 balls and got out while trying to do something unorthodox after failing to score runs quickly.
Ishan Kishan tried to play a reverse sweep to Mehidy Hasan Miraz but was caught plumb in front of the wickets. His struggles against spinners were evident not only in the game against Bangladesh but also against Sri Lanka.
Aakash Chopra while highlighting Ishan Kishan’s struggle said it seemed that he wanted to break out of jail. He pointed out that the keeper-batter was forced to do something different after he failed to rotate the strike. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
“There was again a sequence of dot balls in Ishan Kishan’s innings. There were eight or nine dot balls and then he played a reverse sweep. It seemed like he wanted to break out of jail and run.
“He wanted to break the shackles by doing something different. You are forced to do such things when you are unable to find singles that easily, and he felt that and got dismissed.”
IND vs SL: He is flirting with danger – Aakash Chopra on Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav also got an opportunity in the game against Bangladesh but he yet again failed to deliver. He scored 26 runs off 34 balls and looked quite tentative as he played premeditated sweeps continuously and got out to Shakib Al Hasan while attempting one.
Aakash Chopra believes that Suryakumar Yadav was flirting with danger throughout his innings. He also pointed out the batter’s struggle against left-arm spinners. He elaborated:
“Suryakumar Yadav – that’s another story. Sweeps one after the other, he was playing so many sweeps that you say that he is flirting with danger and that the hand can get burnt anytime.
“Left-arm spin is an issue. We have seen him getting troubled earlier as well, against Mitchell Santner and Gudakesh Motie. He played a lot of sweeps against Shakib Al Hasan and got out while trying to play another.”
India will now be seen in action when they will take on Sri Lanka in the final of the tournament. The game will be played on Sunday (17th September) in Colombo.
