Young Indian opener Shubman Gill believes that winning the Asia Cup 2023 final will boost confidence leading into the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Shubman Gill highlighted that the title victory in the continental tournament will instil winning momentum in the team.
The Rohit Sharma-led team suffered a 6-run defeat against Bangladesh in their last Super Four match in Colombo on Friday, September 15. Shubman Gill played a mature knock, scoring 121 runs off 133 balls, but failed to guide the team to victory in the 266-run chase.
Winning Here Will Give Us A Lot Of Momentum – Shubman Gill
During the post-match press conference, Shubman Gill emphasized the significance of winning the Asia Cup final, emphasizing the winning momentum to avoid added pressure from potential losses.
“Winning the (Asia Cup) final is very important for us because we need to create a winning habit. Peaking at the right time and gaining momentum at the right time is important,” Shubman said.
“It is also important to maintain that momentum because losing in one or two matches can add pressure. Winning here will give us a lot of momentum and confidence going into the World Cup.”
The Rohit Sharma-led team will lock horns with the Sri Lankan team, led by Dasun Shanaka, at the same venue on Sunday, September 17. Notably, the Men in Blue emerged as winners when the tournament was last played in the ODI format in 2018.
We Gave Away Extra 10-15 Runs – Shubman Gill
The 24-year-old admitted that they made some mistakes and conceded extra runs to Bangladesh’s lower order. Gill expressed his confidence in learning from these mistakes and performing well in the upcoming matches.
“I don’t think we have lost any momentum. I think we gave away extra 10-15 runs to their (Bangladesh) lower-order batters, but that apart we played some good cricket.”
“But these things happen on such kinds of wickets. Hopefully, we can execute these lessons in the final (of Asia Cup) and in the World Cup.”
Indian bowlers picked up early wickets, restricting the opposition to 59/4 after opting to bowl first. However, Bangladesh bounced back with the partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy. Bangladesh put up a total of 265 despite losing seven wickets for 193 runs.
