For the second game in a row, Nicholas Pooran impressed with the bat as he helped West Indies beat India by two wickets in the second T20I on Sunday (August 6) in Guyana.
In the series opener in Trinidad, he scored 41 runs to help his side post a competitive total of 149 for 6. West Indies had gone on to win the game by four runs. On Sunday, the hosts were in big trouble when Nicholas Pooran came out to bat.
He had to walk out to bat in the very first over after Brandon King and Johnson Charles were dismissed by Hardik Pandya. And he did not take long to get going. Nicholas Pooran started playing the big shots right from ball one to keep West Indies in contention. He went on to play a match-winning knock of 67 runs off 40 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes.
Nicholas Pooran was delighted with the performance:
Speaking after the game, Nicholas Pooran expressed his delight over the contribution he made to West Indies’ win. He stated that he thought the game was all but done when he was dismissed in the 14th over. However, West Indies lost wickets in a flurry and were reeling at 129 for 8 after 16 overs before an unbeaten stand of 25 runs between Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph took them over the line.
“Yeah, I want to thank Jesus. I want to perform and be satisfied with this. Honestly, I want to finish the game. But when I got out, I thought it was done and dusted. But it is cricket, anything can happen and we did see the game turning on its head,” Nicholas Pooran said after winning the Man of the Match award.
Speaking further, the West Indies star said that his recent performances are not merely a purple patch. Before participating in the ongoing series, he had also starred in the Major League Cricket for MI New York. Nicholas Pooran had smashed a whirlwind century in the final and finished the competition as the highest run-scorer.
“I won’t say this as a purple patch. I have been working hard to get this and it has been going well for me so far. I have seen us losing consistently. I have given away the captaincy as well and now want to enjoy the game. It’s happening to me,” he said.
“I want to enjoy the game and continue entertaining. The score didn’t actually matter to me. It was about batting well and controlling the game. I felt like it was a decent wicket and we are accustomed to getting such wickets here in Guyana. The bowlers are going to give you half-volleys, short balls and full tosses and you need to cash into it,” Pooran added.
