The Board Of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) on Tuesday (4th July) named the new chief selector of the Indian Cricket Team. The governing body roped in the former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the selection committee.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape took the interview of the candidates and they found Ajit Agarkar as the suitable candidate for the post.
As per the various reports, Ajit Agarkar was recently approached by the BCCI, and following that he put his name for the post. It was reported that he was the only big name that applied for the post. The only thing that was stopping him from becoming the chief selector was salary.
It is learned that the current salary of the selector’s post is INR 1 crore per year and Ajit Agarkar wasn’t keen to apply as his other sources of income, like from commentary and as studio experts were far better than what they can earn from the selector’s post.
Ajit Agarkar played 26 Tests, 191 ODI, and four T20s for India and he met all the criteria set by BCCI for the post of selector. He has been a great servant of the Indian cricket team as he holds the record for the fastest half-century by an Indian batter in ODI, achieved with a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000. Apart from this, he held the record for being the fastest to reach 50 ODI wickets for nearly a decade after he achieved the feat in just 23 matches.
