IND vs WI: Gujarat Titans' Shivam Mavi Breaks Silence On Being Benched Throughout IPL 2023

The 24-year-old right-arm pacer Shivam Mavi has opened up on being benched by the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

Mavi was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL from 2018 to 2022 before being released by the franchise. He was acquired by the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the IPL 2023 mega auction for a whopping INR 6 crore. However, to everyone’s surprise, the young pacer warmed the bench for the entire season.

In an interview with News18, Shivam Mavi revealed that he was bowling well in the nets and was completely fit to compete, but he wasn’t given the opportunity to play.

“Mai to apna accha bowling kar raha tha but I didn’t get to play a single game. From my end, I was 110% fit and was consistently bowling in the nets. I used to talk to the management and they did tell me to stay ready. That’s all I could do – ensure my preparations are right and I am ready for every match,” Shivam Mavi said.

Shivam Mavi was further asked about being on India’s radar in the jam-packed calendar for 2023. The 24-year-old said that being at his very best in every single opportunity he gets is very important because people tend to criticize even the batting greats like Virat Kohli if they fail in 2-3 matches.

“I treat every match as an opportunity. In today’s time, every match has become important. Virat bhai 2-3 match nahi karte to log unke bhi peeche lag jaate hai. Ye to run nahi kar raha, ye to wo ho gaya hai, ye ho gaya hai. Such a big example is in front of you. So one needs to be on top of their game in every opportunity which comes their way. I don’t take extra pressure because of this but treat it like an opportunity,” Shivam Mavi said.

Overall, Shivam Mavi has played 32 games in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has bagged 30 wickets. He made his India T20I debut in January 2023 against Sri Lanka and so far has bagged 7 wickets in 6 games. He was recently named in India’s squad for the Asian Games 2023.
