The Rovman Powell-led West Indies National Cricket Team lost the third T20I of the five-match series by 7 wickets against the Hardik Pandya-led India National Cricket Team at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Tuesday, August 08.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. The home side made one forced change to the playing XI as Jason Holder was unavailable for selection and Roston Chase replaced him. India also made a couple of notable changes as Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal replaced Ravi Bishnoi and Ishan Kishan.

Batting first, the hosts posted a good total of 159/5 on the board. Openers Brandon King (42) and Kyle Mayers (25) provided their side with a good start and skipper Rovman Powell finished off the innings exceptionally well with his 40 runs off 19 balls.

Defending the target, the West Indies bowlers once again dismissed the Indian openers – Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal – early on in the innings. However, they struggled against the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. The star Indian batters took the match away from West Indies with their aggressive batting performance.

Suryakumar Yadav scored 83, Tilak Varma score 49 and Hardik Pandya scored 20 to guide India to their first win of the ongoing T20I series.

We were 10-15 runs short – Rovman Powell

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Rovman Powell said that they were 10-15 runs short in the match. Rovman Powell said:

“We were 10-15 runs short. But having said that, credit to the batting unit especially the opening partnership, that’s the kind of start what we asked for.

The West Indies skipper added that they didn’t promote Nicholas Pooran to the No.3 position after a good start because they wanted to give the opportunity to Johnson Charles.

“In hindsight, you can say that (sending Pooran at number 3) but we wanted to give Charles an opportunity, we know what Pooran can do and what kind of form he is in.”

Rovman Powell expressed disappointment over the bowling performance of his side and said that the bowlers made things easy for Indian batters. Rovman Powell said:

“We bowled with too much pace on the ball and that made it easy for the Indian batters. We have a few days gap and we have to come up with better plans.”

West Indies still have a lead of 2-1 in the five-match T20I series and a victory in the fourth T20I will assure them a series win.
