India batting star Shubman Gill is facing criticism for his poor performance with the bat in recent times. His struggle with the bat in England and the West Indies in the last couple of months has made many questions his ability to do well in overseas conditions.

The right-handed batsman began the ongoing year in a stunning manner and enhanced his reputation as one of the best openers in the world. During the home season this year, he began by scoring a fifty and a century in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka before scoring his maiden ODI double-century against New Zealand.

He also scored a T20I fifty against New Zealand and followed it up with a fine century against Australia in the Ahmedabad Test. Shubman Gill then had his most prolific campaign in IPL 2023 as he finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer. The Gujarat Titans opener scored a staggering 890 runs with the help of four fifties and three centuries.

Abhinav Mukund defends Shubman Gill:

Shubman Gill, however, has failed to do well with the bat ever since he started batting outside India. In the World Test Championship final against Australia last month, the highly-rated batsman could only score 13 and 18 as India suffered a crushing 209-run loss at the Oval.

His form in the West Indies has been disappointing too. In the two-match Test series, he registered scores of 6, 10, and 29. And in the first ODI, he was out for just 7. And as Shubman Gill faces criticism for his poor run, former India opener Abhinav Mukund has leaped in his defense, saying that the youngster’s displays with the bat are not a matter of concern.

“I think it’s too early to talk about Shubman Gill’s failure because he has had a phenomenal last couple of years. It is important as a viewer and as an Indian cricket fan to not mess up formats. I feel we always tend to mix up formats and we tend to drop here and there, and we tend to associate form concerned with certain formats,” Mukund told JioCinema.

“The Test format is done with. As far as ODIs are concerned, Shubman Gill is our top player, and I think he should go to the World Cup. I don’t think his form is a concern. I’m sure he’ll be back with a bang,” he added.
