India national cricket team will wear black armbands in the first ODI match against West Indies to condole the demise of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

The ‘Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 years. She was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital on January 8 after contracting the COVID-19 virus along with pneumonia. Despite recovering from COVID, the singer was on ventilator support.

Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating Lata Mangeshkar at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, stated: “It is with profound grief that we announce the sad demise of Lata Mangeshkar at 8:12 am. She has died because of multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post-COVID-19.”

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that Indian cricketers will don black armbands during the first ODI match against West Indies.

“Indian Players will sport black armbands in the first ODI against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium to condole the demise of Lata Mangeshkar. The national flag will fly at half-mast,” Shukla told news agency ANI.

Mangeshkar was an Indian playback singer and occasional music composer, she touched the hearts of her listeners through her melodious voice.

Two-day national mourning will be observed in memory of the playback artist and the national flag will also fly at half-mast for two days, as a sign of tribute to her. 

She was the recipient of three National Film Awards for ‘Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon’, ‘Babul Pyare’, Lag Ja Gale Se Phir’ among others are some of her iconic songs.

The legendary singer is survived by her four younger siblings- Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. 

India will play against West Indies in the first ODI on Sunday (February 6) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
