Young Indian middle-order batter Tilak Varma recently shared the reactions of his family and coach about his first national call-up for the T20 series against the West Indies. Tilak Varma revealed that they were a bit emotional when they got to know about his selection for the Indian team.

Tilak Varma was picked in India’s T20 squad following his impressive performances in the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-handed batter made his international debut during the first T20I match against the Windies team at the Brian Lara Stadium on August 3.

He Wanted To Buy Sweets – Tilak Varma

In a video posted by BCCI on Sunday, Tilak Varma revealed that he got to know about his selection while he was playing for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy last month.

“I was playing Duleep Trophy when the Indian T20I squad was announced. I got to know about my selection and when I called my family and coach, they were a bit emotional so I didn’t speak for too long. My family did cry a bit and my coach was also emotional. He wanted to buy sweets and give them to the entire academy,” Varma said.

The 20-year-old made the most of the opportunity and scored 39 runs off 22 balls, including 2 boundaries and 3 sixes. The southpaw seemed to be in good touch, while other batters struggled to score on a challenging surface.

I Have Been Backed To Play My Natural Game – Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma admitted that head coach Rahul Dravid encouraged him to play his natural game and not worry about getting dismissed.

“West Indies are a good T20I side and I just want to focus on my basics and do well. I can get a bit nervous at times as it is my first series but I want to give my hundred percent. I have spoken to Rahul sir in the practice session and I have been backed to play my natural game. In that process if I get out, then it’s okay,” he concluded.

The Hardik Pandya-led team suffered a four-run loss in the series opener. The Men in Blue will be hoping to register their first win in the series when they take on the West Indies in the second match at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday, August 6.
