Tilak Varma has shown great signs of maturity in the four knocks that he has played in theT20I series against West Indies. He scored 39 in his first T20I, 51 in his second, 49* in his third and an unbeaten 7 in the fourth T20I. India won the fourth T20I by nine wickets to level the series 2-2. The decider will be played at Lauderhill on Sunday.
Varma’s maturity as a cricketer has been the major talking point from his outings so far. The way he paces his innings and plays the pacers and the spinners, he puts the pressure back onto the opposition.
Robin Uthappa while speaking to Jio Cinema spoke exclusively on the ability of the batter to play counter-attacking knocks and put the pressure back onto the opposition. Ahead of the fourth T20I, he spoke about this aspect of Tilak’s game.
I Like Tilak Varma’s Presence Of Mind: Robin Uthappa
“What I love about Tilak Varma is that he exercises his presence of mind exceptionally. He goes out there, he knows that he wants to put pressure back on the opposition. He goes in there with a positive mindset to counter-punch and gets the game even stevens,” Uthappa said on Jio Cinema.
He further spoke about his ability to adjust against the pacers and the spinners according to the pace and bounce of the track. He also hailed the southpaw’s strike-rotation ability.
“So you have seen him get off to some flyers in the last three games. But also as soon as the spinners come on, you see that he is very aware of the wicket and paces himself accordingly. He does not add pressure to him or the team and rotates the strike very well. So you see him striking at 200 in the powerplay,” Uthappa further said.
Tilak Varma after the fourth T20I is on 146 runs. He now needs another 85 runs to overtake Virat Kohli’s record of 231 runs to become the highest run-scoring Indian batter ever in a five-match T20I series against West Indies. There are also talks about Tilak being considered for the ODI World Cup with the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer injured.
