Former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh has made a massive remark on Virat Kohli’s stature as an Indian legend. The former India skipper entered an elite list on Thursday (July 20) when he walked out to bat in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against West Indies.
He became just the fourth Indian and tenth overall to reach the mark of 500 matches in international cricket. Virat Kohli joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid on the list. The right-handed batsman is widely regarded as one of the best if not the best batsman of his generation.
No active batsman has been as prolific as Virat Kohli across formats in the last decade or so. Not very long ago, he was the number one ranked batsman in all three formats of the game. At present, Virat Kohli averages more than 50 in ODIs and T20Is while his average in Tests is just below 50.
Courtney Walsh praises Virat Kohli:
Virat Kohli is proving his class in the ongoing second Test against West India too. The India star was unbeaten on 87 at stumps on day one of the Test. After a century-plus stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India were in a spot of bother when they lost both the openers as well as Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession.
However, Virat Kohli once again came to India’s rescue with his second consecutive fifty in the series as he and Ravindra Jadeja shared an unbeaten stand of 106 runs. Virat Kohli will be looking to score 13 more runs and complete a well-deserved century.
After Virat Kohli’s fine show on day one, Courtney Walsh was all praise for him. Speaking on JioCinema, the legendary fast-bowler said that he would rate the batsman just behind Tendulkar as an Indian great. He snubbed the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and several other legendary cricketers from India to place Kohli just behind Tendulkar, the most decorated batsman in the history of the game.
“Well, as an Indian great, I would rate him just behind Sachin. Sachin is one of the greatest I have seen and played against,” said Courtney Walsh.
“Brian Lara, Viv Richards, I will put them up from a West Indian point of view. Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh – two gentleman I played when I was a youngster, Graham Gooch from England and Javed Miandad. But the value they put on their wickets reminded me of Virat Kohli as well, he doesn’t want to go. So I will definitely have him in my top 4, top 5 greatest cricketers I have seen,” he added.
