IND vs WI: West Indies T20I Squad Announced As Hosts Recall Three Big Names For India Series

West Indies, on Monday (July 31), announced their squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Team India. The T20I series will begin right after the ongoing three-match ODI series ends on August 1.

Keeping in mind the next year’s T20 World Cup, the hosts have recalled their ODI captain Shai Hope to the T20 side. Incidentally, the right-handed batsman had played his last T20I game against India last year. Hope has been one of West Indies best performers in the white-ball format in recent months and has now been rewarded with a recall.

Hope, who struggled to maintain a healthy strike-rate in ODIs in the early part of his career, has scored at a strike-rate of more than 95 in the ongoing year so far. Fast-bowler Oshane Thomas has earned a recall too. Last month, the pacer earned a recall for the ongoing ODI series too but is yet to get a game. Thomas will be hoping that he gets to play in the upcoming T20I series.

West Indies T20I squad:

Another player who has been recalled by the West Indies is Shimron Hetmyer. Last year, the batsman was sensationally dropped from West Indies’ squad for the T20 World Cup after he missed a rescheduled flight to Australia. The left-handed batsman did really well in the IPL this year and his addition will definitely bolster the Caribbean outfit.

“The squad is selected with the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in mind. We are looking at various plans as we try to find the right combinations. As we prepare; we are looking to build a unit which we believe can do the job when we host the global event in just under a year.

“We have some match-winners in our line-up and we will look to have the right kind of preparation, starting here in Trinidad on Thursday. We also have other players who could come into consideration going forward, with the Caribbean Premier League starting next month, others will come into the reckoning,” said lead Selector Desmond Haynes.

Nicholas Pooran will also be a part of the T20I squad after missing the ODI series as he plied his trade in the recently-concluded Major League Cricket where he smashed a stunning match-winning century in the final. Rovman Powell will be leading West Indies in the series.

The five-match series gets underway on Thursday (August 3) in Trinidad. The next two games will take place in Guyana before both the teams fly to Florida for the last two T20Is.
