India head coach Rahul Dravid is confident his team would not face the issue of complacency against West Indies in the upcoming second Test in Trinidad. India have taken an unassailable lead in the two-match series by winning the first Test in Dominica.

The series-opener lasted less than three days as India blew West Indies away. The Rohit Sharma-led side completely outplayed the beleaguered hosts to win the contest by an innings and 141 runs. West Indies’ batsmen and bowlers just looked clueless against the number-one Test team in the world.

After winning the toss, West Indies could manage only 150 runs in the first innings. In reply, India scored 421 for 5 (declared) with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma scoring centuries. In the second innings, West Indies’ performance with the bat was even worse as they were all out for just 130 with Ravichandran Ashwin taking seven wickets to follow up his five wickets in the first innings.

The win has further extended India’s dominance over West Indies in recent years. India have not lost a Test against West Indies since 2002 and unless the latter come up with something special, the former’s winning run looks set to continue. Usually, teams get complacent in such situations but India would guard against it, according to Rahul Dravid.

“I don’t think we will be complacent. I have enough confidence in this team and I know them for the last 18-20 months. Complacency is not a factor that would affect us. We understand the fact that West Indies will be hurting and keen to bounce back. We’ll start from zero all over again,” said Rahul Dravid.

“The team we had picked for the last game covered us in all the bases. We had three fast bowlers and a couple of real high-quality experienced spinners. If we felt the wicket would turn appreciably more, then we had the option of going with three spinners, which we have in the past.

“I think the team that we have got balances us out really well and gives us the opportunity to play on any conditions that we are up against. The wicket might be slightly different to the one we played in Dominica, but I don’t see us making too many changes unless we are forced to,” added the India coach.

Rahul Dravid on milestone Test:

The upcoming Test will be a special one in the India-West Indies rivalry. It will be the 100th Test between the two teams. Speaking about it, Rahul Dravid said:

“It’s a really great occasion to play 100 Test matches between India and West Indies – two great cricketing nations, really proud cricketing countries. Some great cricketers have played over these 100 Test matches. I know, growing up, really looking up to and admiring and following the exploits of the great West Indian players when I was a young kind. A lovely occasion to be a part of.”
