Tilak Varma, on Thursday (August 3), announced his arrival in international cricket in style. The southpaw made his debut during the first T20I between India and West Indies in Trinidad.
And although India ended up losing the close encounter by 4 runs, Tilak Varma managed to make a big impression with his impressive batting. The left-handed batsman came out to bat when India were in a spot of bother after losing both of their openers cheaply. Shubman Gill was the first to depart before Ishan Kishan joined him in the pavilion.
The score was 28 for 2 in the 5th over when Tilak Varma joined his Mumbai Indians teammate Suryakumar Yadav in the middle. And the young batsman did not take long to announce his arrival in international cricket. After starting his knock with a dot delivery, he smashed Alzarri Joseph for two brilliant sixes on just the second and third delivery he faced.
Tilak Varma was eventually out for 39 runs and was the top scorer for Team India in the game. His knock came off 22 balls and was studded with 2 fours and 3 sixes.
Aakash Chopra on Tilak Varma’s debut:
As Tilak Varma hit a six to open his account, former India batsman Aakash Chopra couldn’t help but point out the trend of Mumbai Indians batsmen hitting a six to get going in international cricket. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra recalled that Tilak Varma’s Mumbai Indians teammates Suryakumar and Kishan also began their careers in international cricket in the same fashion.
“What do these Mumbai Indians boys do? Whenever they play their debut game, they open their account with a six.
“Suryakumar Yadav did that, Ishan Kishan (on ODI debut) did that and Tilak Varma has done the same thing. Tilak Varma looked outstanding. If you check the scorecard, all Indian batters were going at a run-a-ball. There was just one batsman who was playing with absolute freedom,” said Chopra.
Talking about the game, West Indies beat India by 4 runs to take the lead in the five-match series. Batting first, West Indies scored 149 for 6 in 20 overs before restricting India to 145 for 9.
