India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, have been sloppy in the field during the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, with several missed chances. The defending champions are second for the most dropped catches in the 20-team marquee tournament, with only Ireland dropping more catches than them so far.
India wrapped up their group stage by winning all four matches. In their final Group A game on Wednesday, February 18, they defeated the Netherlands by 17 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first, India posted 193-6 on the board. Their bowlers then restricted the Dutch side to 176-7.
India Second for Most Dropped Catches at T20 World Cup 2026
India’s batting and bowling have worked well at the T20 World Cup 2026, but their fielding remains a concern. So far, the missed chances have not cost them results. However, the situation could be different in the knockout rounds.
India dropped nine catches in their four group-stage matches. This is the second-highest number among the 20 teams in the tournament. Only Ireland have dropped more catches, with 10, while Namibia are third with six.
Every catch will matter during the Super 8 stage. One missed chance can change a match. If the defending champions want to keep their title hopes alive, they must improve their fielding.
India Is by Far the Worst Catching Team - Varun Aaron
During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, former fast bowler Varun Aaron said that poor catching is a major worry for India ahead of the Super 8 stage. He stated that India have been the worst catching side in international cricket over the last 12 to 18 months.
"Massive problem. India is by far the worst catching team in the last 12 months or maybe 18 months. Their catching percentage is below 70. Every match they drop at least 2-3 catches. I just hope that they don't drop important catches come the Super 8 and the semifinals," Varun Aaron commented.
India’s fielding issues continued against the Netherlands, with a few chances going down once again. One missed opportunity led to a collision between Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh. Notably, neither player was injured, as the impact between them was mild.
India Cruise Into Super 8 After Perfect Group Stage
India ended their Group A campaign with a 17-run win over the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup 2026. The match took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India won all four group matches, finished top of the table, and qualified for the Super 8.
India opted to bat first after winning the toss and scored 193/6 in 20 overs. Shivam Dube scored 66 runs, while Tilak Varma (31), Suryakumar Yadav (34), and Hardik Pandya (30) chipped in with valuable runs. For the Netherlands, Logan van Beek picked up 3/56, while Aryan Dutt took 2/19.
In reply, the Netherlands put up a strong fight and finished on 176/7 in 20 overs. Varun Chakaravarthy was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 3-0-14-3. Dube also chipped in with two wickets and won the Player of the Match award.
