India National Cricket Team, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, got off to a poor start in Test cricket, facing an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the England National Cricket Team.

With the loss to the Ben Stokes-led side at Headingley in Leeds in the Test series opener, Team India hit a historic low and became the first-ever team to achieve an unwanted record.

India lost to England by 5 wickets

Team India lost the toss and were invited to bat first in the match. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul made the most of the good batting conditions on offer and stitched up a 91-run stand.

Rahul fell without scoring big, but his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 ) smashed a sensational century. Skipper Shubman Gill (147) led from the front by playing an exceptional knock, and the vice-captain Rishabh Pant (134) also hit a brilliant ton.

Debutant Sai Sudharsan and comeback man Karun Nair both bagged a duck while the lower-order made no contribution, which resulted in India being bundled out for 471.

With the ball, the Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack bowled England out for 465, ensuring that the visitors got a small lead. In their second innings with the bat, India scored 364 runs, thanks to Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul's tons, to set up a target of 371 runs for England.

Even though the fourth innings chases are difficult and the score was quite big, the hosts easily got past the finish with 5 wickets in hand as Ben Duckett slammed a brutal ton and others supported him well. Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged a five-wicket haul in the first innings, went wicketless, and the other Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners.

India become the first team to lose a Test despite 5 tons

Team India slammed five centuries in the Leeds Test against England - Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), Rishabh Pant (134), KL Rahul (137), and Rishabh Pant (118). It was the first time in Test history that India had scored 5 centuries in a match, and overall, it was the sixth such instance by any side in history.

However, with the defeat, India became the first team to lose a Test match with five individual batters scoring centuries. Before India, only one team - Australia in 1928 against England- had lost a Test match with four individual hundreds. Also, India's total of 835 runs aggregated in the Leeds Test is the fourth highest for any team losing a match.

Talking about some other records from the match, the 371-run target chased down by the Three Lions was their second-highest fourth-innings chase in Test history and the second-biggest by any team against India.

Also, the 1673 runs aggregated by England and India in the Test series opener is the highest-ever for any Test match between the two teams.

Rishabh Pant joins the unwanted list

The India vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who became just the second wicketkeeper-batsman in history to hit twin tons in a Test match, created an unwanted record.

He became the 12th batter to end up on the losing team despite hitting twin tons, and neither of his 6 away Test tons have come in a winning cause so far (1 draw and 4 losses).

Speaking of the defeat on the BBC Test Match Special, Shubman Gill labelled it as a tough pill to swallow. He stated:

"A tough one. We had our moments on top, but England are so good and we needed to kill the game when we had the chance."
