Since 1932, when Team India played their first-ever international match, the team has been led by a remarkable line of captains. The captains have played an integral role in shaping the destiny of the Indian team.
The captains have been at the forefront of India's remarkable journey from underdogs to a powerhouse of cricket. Here we are taking a look at the players who have had the honour of leading India in international cricket.
India Cricket Team Past Captains - Test:
Shubman Gill is the current captain of the Indian team in Tests. The right-handed batsman was appointed as the captain in May 2025 after Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format of the game. Gill became the 37th captain of the India Test team.
The first-ever player to lead India in Tests is C.K. Nayudu. He led India in 4 Tests. Virat Kohli holds the record for leading India in the most Test matches. The former India Test captain led the team in 68 Tests. He is also the most successful Indian Test captain. Under him, India won 40 Tests.
Apart from Kohli, MS Dhoni is the only other player to lead India in 50 or more Tests. Dhoni captained the team in 60 Tests, guiding them to win in 27 of them.

Rohit Sharma is the present captain of the India team in ODIs. Former batsman Ajit Wadekar is the first-ever ODI captain of India. He led India in 2 ODIs.
MS Dhoni holds the record for leading India in most ODIs. The former wicketkeeper-batsman led India in ODIs for almost a decade. Under him, India played 200 ODIs and won 110 of them. He is still the only Indian captain to lead the team to 100 or more ODIs.

Suryakumar Yadav is the present captain of the India T20I team. He was named the T20I captain in 2024 after Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format of the game. Former India opener Virender Sehwag is the first player to lead India in T20Is. On the other hand, MS Dhoni holds the record for leading India in most T20Is - 72.
