With a 7-wicket dominating victory on Sunday in Colombo, India registered their 92nd ODI triumph over Sri Lanka – now a record tied with Australia and Pakistan for most ODI wins over a single opposition. Australia have defeated New Zealand and Pakistan have defeated Sri Lanka 92 times each in ODIs.
Shikhar Dhawan, the captain for the tour, will once again lead the side on Tuesday in the second ODI to create a new world record.
Dhawan himself showed his superb ODI form anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 86 in India’s successful run chase of 263, while Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan blasted their way to 43 off 24 and 59 off 42, respectively.
Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan break records:
Dhawan also went past Ajit Wadekar on the list of the highest scores by Indian batsmen in their maiden innings as ODI captain. Wadekar, India’s first-ever ODI captain, scored 67 vs England at Headingley in 1974. The highest score by an Indian on an ODI captaincy debut is 110 by Sachin Tendulkar in 1996, also against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
