With a 7-wicket dominating victory on Sunday in Colombo, India registered their 92nd ODI triumph over Sri Lanka – now a record tied with Australia and Pakistan for most ODI wins over a single opposition. Australia have defeated New Zealand and Pakistan have defeated Sri Lanka 92 times each in ODIs.

Shikhar Dhawan, the captain for the tour, will once again lead the side on Tuesday in the second ODI to create a new world record.

Dhawan himself showed his superb ODI form anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 86 in India’s successful run chase of 263, while Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan blasted their way to 43 off 24 and 59 off 42, respectively.

Dhawan also went past Ajit Wadekar on the list of the highest scores by Indian batsmen in their maiden innings as ODI captain. Wadekar, India’s first-ever ODI captain, scored 67 vs England at Headingley in 1974. The highest score by an Indian on an ODI captaincy debut is 110 by Sachin Tendulkar in 1996, also against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The left-handed opener also went past 6,000 ODIs runs, and is the fourth-fastest to do so. He completed 1000 runs against Sri Lanka – in terms of innings, he is the fastest player to reach 1000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka; former South African batsman Hashim Amla, with 18 innings, was the previous fastest.

Debutant Ishan Kishan became the second batsman to score fifty on debut in both ODI and T20I cricket, after South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen. In March, Kishan had whacked 56 runs off 32 balls on his T20I debut against England.
Turned out, Sunday, July 18th, was also his birthday, and he became the second Indian to make his ODI debut on his birthday. Gursharan Singh made his ODI debut against Australia on his 27th birthday in 1990.
Kishan recorded the second-fastest ODI fifty by a debutant, reaching the mark in 33 balls. His teammate Krunal Pandya holds the record for fastest fifty on ODI debut with his 26-ball dash against England earlier this year.
