The Indian cricket team had a horrific outing with the bat during the first Test of the three-match series against the New Zealand cricket team. Rohit Sharma's side achieved many unwanted records with the bat after being bowled out for just 46 runs in their first innings of the series opener in Bengaluru.
India chose to bat first at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday, October 17. Tim Southee triggered the collapse by dismissing Rohit Sharma for just runs. Matt Henry was the wrecker-in-chief as he picked up a five-wicket haul. Young bowler William O'Rourke bagged four wickets in India's first innings.
The Indian batters failed to put up a fight against the opposition bowling attack under the overcast conditions on the second day. Only Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) crossed double digit mark, while Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin bagged ducks.

India has achieved an unfortunate record for its lowest Test score at home. This dismal performance surpassed the previous record of 75 runs against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987. Other notable low totals include 76 runs against South Africa in Ahmedabad and 83 runs against England in Chennai.

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team recorded the lowest Test total in the Asian subcontinent, surpassing the West Indies' previous low of 53 runs against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1986. The Pakistan cricket team was also bowled out for 53 during a match against Australia in 2002 and 59 in the first innings.
It is worth mentioning that the New Zealand national cricket team has struggled in India, securing only two wins out of 36 Tests played on Indian soil. However, their bowlers have given them a strong position in the ongoing Bengaluru Test match, as they aim for their first Test victory on Indian soil since 1988.
