India are one of the most successful teams in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy. No team has managed to win more Champions Trophy titles than India.
The Men in Blue have won the marquee event three times so far. There have been nine editions of the ICC Champions Trophy so far and India have participated in all of them.
India in ICC Champions Trophy - Journey so far:
1998 Champions Trophy:
The inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy was played in 1998. The competition was hosted by Bangladesh. India's campaign in the tournament came to an end with a defeat against West Indies in the semifinal.
2000 Champions Trophy:
The second edition of the ICC Champions Trophy was played in Kenya. After losing the semifinal in the last edition, India qualified for the final in 2000 under Sourav Ganguly's captaincy. In the semifinal, they beat defending champions South Africa before losing to New Zealand in the final.
2002 Champions Trophy:
Sri Lanka hosted the third edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002. India qualified for the final once again with Ganguly being the captain. India won both of their group games before beating South Africa in the semifinal.
The final against Sri Lanka was washed out and both the teams were declared joint winners as India clinched their maiden Champions Trophy title.
2004 Champions Trophy:
The 2004 edition of the competition was hosted by England. India were the defending champions but crashed out at the group stage.
2006 Champions Trophy:
In 2006, India hosted the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time and were one of the favourites to win the tournament. However, the Rahul Dravid-led side endured a terrible campaign on home soil and crashed out at the group stage.
2009 Champions Trophy:
In 2009, the Champions Trophy was played in South Africa with MS Dhoni leading India. For the third time in a row, India exited the competition at the group stage.
2013 Champions Trophy:
England hosted the Champions Trophy in 2013 and this edition marked the beginning of a dominating run from India in the tournament. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India went on to beat England in the final to win the Champions Trophy after more than 10 years. They also became the second team after Australia to win the tournament twice.
2017 Champions Trophy:
England hosted the competition in 2017 too. India once again enjoyed a dominating run and qualified for the final under Virat Kohli's captaincy. However, the Men in Blue suffered a crushing loss at the hands of Pakistan in the title-decider.
2025 Champions Trophy:
The ninth edition of the Champions Trophy was held eight years after the previous edition. The competition was co-hosted by Pakistan and UAE. Under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, India enjoyed an unbeaten campaign and beat New Zealand in the final to become the first-ever team to win the Champions Trophy three times.
