The India national selectors play a very important role in shaping the Indian team's journey. The selectors are appointed by the BCCI and are responsible for picking the squads for all international games across the three formats.

Their role is not only selecting the players for a series or tournament but also to groom players, evaluate their performance not only in international cricket but in domestic cricket as well, in addition to working closely with the team management to form a strong team. They decide that pretty much sets up the team's course and direction in the long run.

India National Selectors:

How are India national selectors selected?

The convention has been to pick one selector from each zone in the national selection panel. There are a total of five zones in the country - north, south, east, west, and central. One of the five selectors is appointed as the chairman of the selection panel. Usually, the most experienced member in terms of Test matches played is appointed as the head of the panel.

The selectors are interviewed and appointed by the BCCI's three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). A selector cannot have more than a combined term of five years.

Before the interviews, the BCCI advertises for the posts. The board then invites the shortlisted candidates for interviews. For applying for the post, the applicants should have played (a) a minimum of seven Tests, or (b) 30 first-class games, or (c) ten ODIs and 20 first-class matches.

Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar is the head of the present India national selection panel. He was named the chairman of the selection panel in 2023. Before him, Chetan Sharma was the head of the selection panel. Agarkar represented India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and 4 T20Is. He picked up 58 Test wickets, 288 ODI wickets, and 3 T20I wickets.

The other members of the selection panel are Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and Sridharan Sharath.
