Expressing his surprise over Team India’s injury crisis, former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist has said the visitors need to find out the reason behind the spate of injuries that have plagued them during the ongoing tour. India have suffered a spate of injuries on the tour and have played all the four Tests of the ongoing series with a depleted team.

Senior pacers Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and batsman Rohit Sharma did not travel with the team to Australia in November after suffering injuries in the IPL. Later, Rohit joined the Test team for the last two Tests. But India have kept losing their players’ services right from the first Test. After the first Test, Mohammed Shami was ruled out with a fractured wrist.

In the second Test, Umesh Yadav sustained an injury in his calf while bowling. In the third Test, Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin suffered hamstring and back injuries respectively while Ravindra Jadeja was hit on his thumb by a short ball. Jasprit Bumrah was also sidelined after suffering an abdominal injury.

On Friday, India suffered yet another injury setback when fast-bowler Navdeep Saini walked off the field with a suspected groin injury. The BCCI later announced that the pacer has gone for a scans. A further update on him is awaited. And as the Indian players keep suffering muscle injuries, Adam Gilchrist believes the team needs to find the reason behind it.

“It’s just been extraordinary the adversity they have faced on this tour. They’ll need to work out why there have been so many injuries,” Adam Gilchrist told ‘foxsports.com.au’.

“A few have been inflicted by the Australian pace attack, but the soft tissue injuries – they’ll need to assess why they came about and whether it was something in or out of their control,” added the legendary cricketer.

At the same time, Adam Gilchrist was quick to acknowledge the fight shown by India despite the several setbacks. He lauded India for the fight back and determination showed by them in the face of adversity.

“But you can’t question their resilience and their willingness to stay in the fight and not lie down,” the 49-year-old said. “There have been plenty of talented touring teams across all nations that have been here and succumbed to Test cricket in this country. It’s amazing that they’ve got to the Gabba well and truly in the series with a chance to win it.”
