The India Test team is one of the strongest Test units in the world at present. India have been one of the most consistent teams in the longest format of the game in recent years. India struggled in the early years of the 2010s, but their fortunes changed once Virat Kohli took charge of the team.
Under his captaincy, India did not lose a single Test series at home. During the same phase, India also won their first-ever Test series in Australia in addition to registering famous victories in other challenging countries such as England and South Africa.
Under Kohli's captaincy, India also qualified for the final of the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) but lost the game against New Zealand. In 2023, India qualified for the final once again but lost the title-decider against Australia.

India's unbeaten run at home came to an end in 2024 when they lost were whitewashed in the 3-match series against New Zealand. It was their first Test series defeat at home sincethe 2012/13 season. This was followed by a 3-1 series defeat in Australia. It was India's first series loss against Australia since 2014/15 season.
2025 marks a new beginning for the Indian Test team. One of India's most decorated spinners of all time, Ravichandran Ashwin retired from Tests during the Australia tour while Kohli and Rohit Sharma brought down curtains on their Test career in May.
With Rohit retiring, young Shubman Gill has been named the new India Test captain. India's Test team is in a transition phase and the onus will be on the young players to lead the team to new heights in red-ball cricket.
