India to play historic T20I against Japan
The one-off T20I match between India and Japan will be the first event under Sport 75, a new sports initiative between the two countries. The initiative was launched after an agreement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The main aim behind this initiative is to bring Indian and Japanese people closer through sports and increase cooperation between the two nations. This is also linked to India’s aim of hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The BCCI said in an official media release, “The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are delighted to announce that the men’s teams from each nation will play a T20 International match to launch the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan Diplomatic Relations. The Suzuki Cup will take place at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture on Tuesday, 22nd September 2026.”
Devajit Saikia reveals BCCI’s big vision as India takes cricket to Japan
The BCCI said that India and Japan can share sports knowledge, training ideas, and experience while creating more opportunities for athletes from both countries to meet and work together under this Sport 75 initiative. Amid this, BCCI issues major update on Asian Games 2026 logistics amid accommodation concerns.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said of the historic move: “The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.”
BCCI secretary hails India-Japan friendship
Saikia was elated that cricket will become part of the celebration marking 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries and thanked the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) for its efforts in making this fixture possible.
He also noted that India and Japan share a “strong and longstanding relationship and friendship." The BCCI secretary said that the game should grow in more countries, not just in places where it is already popular.
The BCCI wants to help the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) develop cricket in Japan. This could include sharing knowledge, experience, training methods, and support. Saikia added, “The BCCI will work closely with the JCA to further strengthen cricket in Japan and to build on this relationship in the years ahead.”
JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji hails historic India T20I
Meanwhile, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) CEO Naoki Miyaji said that he is happy and proud that Japan will host India. Miyaji thanked the BCCI for making the match possible.
Naoki Miyaji stated, “To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the then home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association. We thank the BCCI for working with us towards this goal and greatly look forward to welcoming the passion of Indian cricket fans, and we actively encourage any local Japanese people curious about cricket to come and cheer on our team in what will be a truly memorable occasion.”
