The Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against England has been announced by the BCCI selection committee and a lot of surprising names have been included. The selectors have presented the likes of Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna with an opportunity for the England series owing to their Vijay Hazare Trophy performances recently.

It will be the maiden call-up for Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna while Shubman Gill has retained his place in the squad. Suryakumar Yadav also has been rewarded with a place in the ODI squad for his recent performance in the T20 series against England while KL Rahul will be the second wicket-keeper in the squad. Here are 3 deserving players who should have been a part of the squad.

It would have been very tough for the selectors to leave out Prithvi Shaw for the ODI series who has done exceedingly well in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. Prithvi Shaw captained the Mumbai side and won them the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a series of high-quality knocks. He finished as the highest run-getter in the tournament for this year.

Prithvi Shaw scored 827 runs in the 8 games he played which is the highest amount of runs in a single season in the tournament history.  He smashed four centuries and an important fifty in the final at an average of 165 and recorded the highest individual score in the tournament with a 227 not out. His prime form would have certainly been a discussion among the selectors and he will be unlucky to miss out.

The current Indian openers have been very consistent over the years and Padikkal despite having two outstanding seasons couldn’t break into the Indian side yet. Shubman Gill has been backed to do the job as the backup opener and Padikkal has wait to get his chance in the Indian colours. He was brilliant in his debut IPL last season as well and finished as the top run-scorer for RCB in the tournament surpassing big names like Kohli and Devilliers.

Padikkal continued his rich vein of form from the IPL into the Vijay Hazare Trophy scoring 737 runs in 7 games at an average of 147. He finished with four centuries and three half-centuries in the tournament and will be disheartened that he missed out from the Indian squad again. He will play for the RCB team in the upcoming IPL and will be looking to perform consistently which might push his chances in the Indian team again.

The all-rounder from Himachal Pradesh had an excellent season in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021 and was one of the standout performers of the tournament. He finished as the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament this year and picked up 16 wickets in 5 games at an average of 13.25. He has been part of various IPL teams in the past including Mumbai Indian in 2013 and will be hoping to get an IPL contract soon.

His best bowling figures of 6 for 27 came against Rajasthan where he ripped through the batting order and he enjoyed success on the most part of the campaign. However, he could not take his team to the knockouts but showed that he is ready to back in the reckonings for Indian selection. He has played four international games for India in his career taking two wickets overall four years back.
