Former India spinner, Pragyan Ojha is surprised by the fact that a high-quality player such as Ajinkya Rahane has been very inconsistent. Rahane scored 1 and 0 in the first Test against England as India succumbed to a 227-run heavy loss.
Pragyan Ojha points out that after the wonderful century in Melbourne, Rahane has struggled to go past even 50 in 6 innings. He believes that considering the stature of Rahane as a senior batsman and a vice-captain, it is imperative that the right-hander returns to his best form in the ongoing series.
“That is something which really surprises me. I have played a lot of cricket with him, right from our younger days. Someone of his stature gets a brilliant hundred at the MCG and after that, it looks as if he is finding his form. It is something that even I was taken aback,” Pragyan Ojha told Sports Today.
“I believe he needs to sort this out because a man of his stature who has done so much for the country, the vice-captain of the Indian team, he has to be consistent. When he plays, it looks like he is a brilliant batsman but at times when he starts getting out, then you feel like he is out of form. So, this is something he needs to address,” he added.
Nobody is questioning his place in the team or his role as a vice-captain: Pragyan Ojha
Pragyan Ojha adds that Rahane’s place in the team as a batsman or as Virat Kohli’s deputy is in no doubt – after he just led India to a historic comeback series win in Australia – however, everyone is upset by the inconsistency in his batting.
“Nobody is criticizing his position in the team or questioning him being the vice-captain or what he has done. But everybody is surprised, the whole Indian team was unsettled after the loss at Adelaide and he goes to MCG as a captain and plays a brilliant knock,” stated the 34-year-old former spinner.
