Joe Root, became the latest entrant into the 100 Tests club, when he walked out for a toss with India’s Virat Kohli at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, for the first of the four-match Test series. Root lighted up his milestone Test match with many records, including becoming the first batsman in Test history to score a double century in his 100th Test.
Root went on to make 218 runs as England piled on 578 runs in 1st innings. He also added 40 runs in the second innings, as England made 178, setting up a 420-run target for the Indian team. The Virat Kohli-led side failed to chase the target down, requiring 381 runs on the final day with 9 wickets to go. India was bundled for 192 and lost the match by 227 runs and England went 1-0 up in the series.
Joe Root also won the Player of the Match for his 218 and 40 and a brilliant catch to remove Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings as well.
