India, led by Shubman Gill, has taken control of the second Test against England, ending Day 3 with a 244-run lead and nine wickets still in hand. As the match heads into Day 4 (Saturday, July 5) at Edgbaston in Birmingham, weather could play a role, with rain interruptions expected to impact play.
India took a 180-run first-innings lead after bowling out the Ben Stokes-led side for 407 on Day 3 of the second Test. The visitors added 64 runs in just 13 overs before stumps, with Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed for 28. India are likely to set a massive fourth-innings target with only limited time left in the match.
Jamie Smith Records Highest Test Score by an England Wicketkeeper
After Shubman Gill’s (269) record-breaking double century in the first innings, England were struggling at 77/3 by the end of Day 2. Joe Root (22) and Ben Stokes (0) were dismissed off consecutive deliveries from Mohammed Siraj, leaving them reeling at 84/5.
However, Jamie Smith turned the tide with a stunning counterattack. The wicketkeeper-batter reached his hundred off just 80 balls - the joint-third fastest Test century by an England player. He smashed Prasidh Krishna for 23 runs in a single over.
Smith shared a crucial 303-run partnership with Harry Brook, who scored 158 off 234 balls, helping England avoid the follow-on. But the hosts suffered another collapse late in the innings, losing their final five wickets for just 20 runs.
Mohammed Siraj returned to clean up the tail, finishing with excellent figures of 6 for 70. Smith remained unbeaten on 184 off 207 deliveries, including 21 boundaries and four sixes, as England were bowled out for 407.

Mohammed Siraj, India’s Best Bowler in England’s First Innings
Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers for India in England’s first innings. He took 6 wickets for 70 runs, and it was his maiden five-wicket haul in England and his fourth overall in Test cricket. Notably, all of his five-wicket hauls have come in overseas conditions.
The fast bowler played a pivotal role early on Day 3 by dismissing Joe Root and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries, triggering a collapse. Siraj later returned to clean up the tail, picking up three quick wickets.
