Following recent tensions between India and Pakistan, the future of their encounters in ICC tournaments has been in doubt. The International Cricket Council’s annual conference is set to discuss whether India and Pakistan will face each other in upcoming events, including the T20 World Cup 2026.
Relations between the two nations have reached a new low after Pakistan’s unprovoked attack on Indian borders. India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This has fuelled speculation over the future of India-Pakistan cricket matches in ICC events.
ICC Set to Discuss India-Pakistan Clash Amid Tensions
Diplomatic relations remain tense despite an official ceasefire between India and Pakistan. This strained relationship is expected to impact cricket between the two countries, especially in upcoming tournaments.
A key decision regarding the future of India-Pakistan matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup is likely to be discussed at the International Cricket Council meeting scheduled from July 17 to 20. The two teams have often been placed in the same group during ICC events.
However, according to a report by PTI, the ICC might decide not to group India and Pakistan together this time, after the ongoing political tensions and the uncertainty surrounding their cricketing encounters.
BCCI Source Makes Major Revelation Ahead of Crucial ICC Meeting
If both India and Pakistan advance to the knockout rounds, they are expected to face each other in the tournament.
The BCCI remains the most influential body in international cricket, and with Jay Shah, an Indian, now leading the ICC as chairman. Shah will participate in his first ICC annual conference since becoming chair in December.
Fans and Experts Urge BCCI to Break Cricket Ties with Pakistan
There has been growing pressure from fans and experts urging the BCCI to boycott Pakistan in international cricket. India hasn’t played a bilateral series against Pakistan since 2012-13 and only faces them in ACC and ICC events like the World Cups.
The Asia Cup 2025 is set to be played in September, but The Indian Express reported that the BCCI would skip the tournament because the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is led by Pakistan’s interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi. This could lead to the tournament being canceled.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has denied these reports, saying the board is currently focused on completing IPL 2025 and the upcoming India-England series, with no decisions made about the Asia Cup yet.
It’s also important to note that India and Pakistan have agreed to a hybrid model for ICC tournaments hosted in either country until 2027. India played their matches in Dubai during the 2025 Champions Trophy, which was hosted by Pakistan, as part of this arrangement.
