BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that the Indian team will be the title contenders in the ICC tournaments to be played between 2022 to 2031. In this period, the team will participate five T20 World Cups, three 50-over World Cups and two Champions Trophies.

The last time India won an ICC tournament was in 2013 when they England by five runs in the final in their backyard. Apart from this, India has won the 1983 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. They also shared the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka as the final day and the reserve day was washed out due to rain.

India will host the 2023 ODI World Cup which will be there as the sole host. In 1987, 1996 and 2011, they were co-hosts with Pakistan(1987 and 1996), Sri Lanka (1996 and 2011) and Bangladesh (2011). They will co-host the T20 World Cup 2026 alongside Sri Lanka.

In 2029, India will be the sole host of the Champions Trophy and then will co-host 50-over World Cup in 2031 alongside Bangladesh. Meanwhile, The former India skipper believes India can win an ICC tournament but they can’t win every tournament.

Sourav Ganguly says India will be the title contender in the upcoming years

“From 2022 to 2031, there will be a world championship every year and India will be a contender. I have always believed they can win. They had a semi-final loss in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. In 2021, they lost in the group stage itself (T20 World Cup). But like any other Indian cricket fan, I believe India will win some of those tournaments. However, they can’t win everything,” said Ganguly.

Ganguly added that India is a great side when he was asked how does he sees the team going with Rahul Dravid being the head coach and Rohit Sharma being appointed as the white-ball format skipper. He also said that the team has performed well in the last five years.

“It’s very difficult to predict the future, but India is a great side. We have a very good coach and the team is in able hands with a new captain as well. So, we wish them all the best. Cricket is a team game. The players together with their captain and coach make it successful. And they have been successful in the last five years; I don’t see any reason why they can’t now. I wish them the best and hopefully, we can reach greater heights in the years to come,”

India was the first team to win the 50-over World Cup while hosting it in 2011. They will be looking forward to maintain the streak. As far as T20 World Cup is concerned, they will be looking to win in 2022 in Australia as they couldn’t qualify for the semis this year.
