Vijay Shankar made his international debut during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. However, he did not have the best of debut series as he struggled with his timing in the all-important summit clash against Bangladesh.
However, his fellow Tamil Nadu teammate Dinesh Karthik came to Shankar and India’s rescue as the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a whirlwind 8-ball 27, including the last ball-six, to help the Men in Blue clinch the title.

Shankar, however, made the most of his chances in One-day International cricket in early 2019, he was drafted in the ODI team for the series in New Zealand after Hardik Pandya was suspended due to an off-field controversy.
The all-rounder made heads turn when he played a match-winning knock in the fifth ODI on a difficult track. Vijay Shankar backed it up with good performances against Australia in India’s last ODI assignment before the 2019 World Cup.
And, with Ambati Rayudu suffering a loss of form, the then chief selector MSK Prasad cited Vijay Shankar’s ‘three-dimensional’ qualities behind his inclusion in the World Cup squad.
Shankar claimed a wicket on his very first World Cup delivery against Pakistan, however, he sustained an injury in the nets, leading to a premature end to his campaign.
His last international appearance came against the West Indies in the same event and he hasn’t represented India since.
