Indian Cricket Team Coach
Gautam Gambhir is the present Indian Cricket Team Head Coach. The former India batsman was appointed as the head coach in July 2024. He replaced his former teammate and captain Rahul Dravid as Indian cricket team coach.
Gambhir's reign started on a poor note as India lost the ODI series in Sri Lanka before suffering a humiliating 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in the home Test series. It was followed by a 4-1 loss in the Test series in Australia.
However, the Indian team won the Champions Trophy in 2025 to end the team's long wait for an ICC trophy in the 50-over format.
Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Career:
Before being appointed as Indian Cricket Team Coach, Gambhir did not have any experience as a head coach. However, he had served as a mentor for two teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He first joined Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor in 2022.
Gambhir stayed with LSG for two seasons and helped the team qualify for the playoffs in both the seasons. Incidentally, LSG have not qualified for the playoffs since they parted ways with Gambhir.
In 2024, Gambhir joined Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor and made an instant impact. KKR went on to win the IPL after a gap of 10 years. Just over a month after the IPL triumph, the BCCI roped in Gambhir as Indian cricket team coach.

Gautam Gambhir's Playing Career:
Gambhir enjoyed a stellar career as a batsman not only in international cricket but also in the IPL. Hailing from Delhi, Gambhir made his international debut in 2003 and went on to represent India in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is.
He scored more than 4000 runs in ODIs and over 5000 runs in Tests. Gambhir scored 20 centuries across formats and was also named the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009. He was a key member of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He was India's highest run-scorer in the final of both the tournaments.
Gambhir's IPL career is equally impressive. After playing for Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) from 2008 to 2011, he joined KKR in 2011 and changed their fortunes with his captaincy. Under his captaincy, KKR qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 2011 before winning their maiden title in 2012. In 2014, Gambhir led KKR to their second title.
Overall, he played 154 games in the IPL and scored 4217 runs with the help of 36 fifties. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2018.
