Indian Selection Committee Needs To Figure Out What They Want Says Graeme Smith On Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli's Chances For T20 World Cup 2024

Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith feels that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s addition to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad is a difficult choice for Indian selectors. Graeme Smith also shared his opinion on how Indian selectors should form the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is set to take place this year in June. The 9th edition of the T20I World Cup will take place in the West Indies and the United States. The tournament will take place from June 1 to June 29.

Notably, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not played any T20I game since the start of 2023. Both these players focused only on ODIs and Tests as selectors rolled out a young squad for the shortest format under captain Hardik Pandya.

However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. Sharma will also lead the team in the series in the absence of his deputy Hardik Pandya.

We Have Seen IPL Produce Serious Amount Of Talent For India: Graeme Smith

Former South Africa batting legend Graeme Smith shared his views on India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. While speaking to ANI, Smith said IPL has produced a lot of talent for Indian cricket in T20Is.

“It’s about balancing workloads and introducing new players at various times, giving opportunity to the player with the amount of cricket India plays. We have seen IPL produce a serious amount of talent for India in this format,” the former Proteas opener said.

Difficult Choice For Selectors: Graeme Smith On Kohli-Sharma Addition

Graeme Smith, who represented South Africa from 2002 to 2014, also feels that adding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the T20 World Cup squad is a difficult choice for selectors with the amount of talent present in the country.

“I think the selection panel and coaches have to figure out what stars they want and what squad they want to take from India to play on those types of pitches. We will have to see how they will compile the squad”.

“With the amount of talent that India has now, it is a difficult choice to make. I think balancing some experience with youth …. also how they go about that,” the 42-year-old further added.

Team India In Group A In ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Kohli and Sharma have made themselves available for selection for ICC T20 World Cup 2024. India is part of Group A in the tournament. Teams like Pakistan, United States, Canada, and Ireland are also part of the same group.

India will face Ireland in their opening match on June 5. The ICC tournament will observe the participation of 20 teams; divided into 5 groups. The top 2 teams from each group will enter the Super 8 round later.

Meanwhile, Team India will clash with Afghanistan in three T20I games starting Thursday, January 11. The IND vs AFG 1st T20I takes place at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
