The Indian women's cricket team created history in the ongoing one-off Test against South African women in Chennai. The Indian girls were on fire with the bat as the hosts achieved a couple of historic milestones on the opening and second days of the ongoing one-off Test against South Africa.

On Friday, June 28, Shafali Verma stole the spotlight with an extraordinary performance, smashing a record-breaking double century during India's one-off Test match against South Africa.

Her stunning innings of 205 runs off just 194 balls not only propelled India to their highest-ever single-day total in Test cricket history but also set the stage for a day filled with shattered records.

Shafali added 292 runs with her opening partner Smriti Mandhana, who played an outstanding innings of 149 runs off 161 balls to help India Women post a record-breaking total of 525/4 on Day 1 in Chennai, leaving the South Africa women’s cricket team bowlers struggling to contain the relentless onslaught from the Indian batters on Friday.

With this total, the Indian women's cricket team etched their names into the record books, as they created history by becoming the team with the highest runs scored on day one’s play in Test cricket history, a record that surpassed the feats of men's and women’s teams.

Previously, the record for most runs on Day one’s play in Test cricket was held by the Sri Lanka men's team, which scored 509/9 runs against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2022. In women's cricket, England had the previous record, scoring 431/2 runs against New Zealand in Christchurch in 1935.

Apart from this feat, it was also a historic occasion, as it was the first time any team scored over 520 runs on day one of a Test match. Additionally, on the second day of the ongoing one-off Test against South Africa, the Indian women's cricket team broke a massive record and set a world record.

Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, India declared their innings at 603/6, setting a new world record for the highest team total in women's Test cricket history. India Women overtook the previous record of 575/9 set by Australia earlier this year in Perth.

Shafali Verma achieves big feat with her double century against South Africa

Meanwhile, Shafali Verma's double century broke the record for the fastest century previously held by Australia's Annabel Sutherland, who had reached the milestone off 248 balls against South Africa earlier in the year.

The young batting sensation achieved this feat with consecutive sixes off Delmi Tucker, followed by a single, to complete her double century. Shafali also became the only second Indian woman to score a double century in Test cricket, after Mithali Raj.

Mithali, the former Indian captain and legendary batter, scored 214 runs off 407 balls during a drawn Test against England at Taunton in August 2002 to achieve the milestone.

Notably, apart from Shafali and Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues (59), Harmanpreet Kaur (69), and Richa Ghosh (86) have also contributed impressive fifties to India’s record-breaking total against South Africa.
