India came close to a breakthrough, but luck was not on their side as Shai Hope survived a bizarre hit-wicket scare right before the lunch break on Day 4 of the ongoing second and final Test at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi.
Kuldeep Yadav bowled a looping leg-break at 78.1 kph that spun sharply and bounced nicely, pitching in just the right spot to trouble the West Indies’ No. 4 batter. The ball hit Sai Hope’s pad, then glanced off his hand, and then rolled dangerously past the leg stump without hitting the bails.

It was one of those rare moments where Hope got lucky and India was unlucky, as the crucial wicket slipped away from their hands in the most unusual fashion. Hope’s quick reflexes and luck gave him a lifeline to complete his century, as he is just 8 runs away from the milestone.

Shai Hope ends eight-year wait with century against India
Meanwhile, Shai Hope made the most of the lifeline he got before the lunch break against India in the ongoing Delhi Test on Day 4. Hope reached the three figures in a fashion, hitting the boundary to the third-man fence off Mohammed Siraj’s length ball outside off stump that kept low.
It was the West Indies star’s first century in eight years. His last red-ball hundreds came in 2017 with back-to-back centuries against England, and this is his third Test hundred overall. Hope’s tone came at a crucial time for the West Indies in the ongoing final Test against India.

After India enforced the follow-on, the touring side looked to be in serious trouble, but Hope, along with John Campbell, who also smacked a stunning century, has brought them right back into the game. Hope took off his helmet to celebrate the milestone but remains focused on continuing his innings and building a bigger score for his team against India.
However, Hope failed to continue the momentum, as he could add only three runs to his century before falling to Mohammed Siraj. He was outfoxed by a back-of-a-length delivery around off stump. The ball kept low, and an inside edge rattled the stumps.
John Campbell and Shai Hope make history with twin centuries against India
This is the first time two batters have hit centuries in the same innings against India for the West Indies since Dimuth Karunaratne (141) and Kusal Mendis (110) did the same in Colombo in 2017.
Campbell and Hope’s efforts also helped the West Indies avoid an innings defeat for the first time in 11 Tests where they were forced to follow on. The last time they managed to escape a heavy loss after following on was back in 2013 against New Zealand in Dunedin, where they drew the match.
The West Indies showed incredible resilience under the pressure in the ongoing Delhi Test, achieving several rare milestones. For the first time since January 2023, they have batted for more than 80 overs in both innings of a Test. This feat came after 22 Tests.
