BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has hailed team India despite losing the World Test Championship comprehensively to New Zealand. Virat Kohli’s men stumbled at the doorstep as New Zealand came out on top in Southampton to be crowned as the inaugural World Test Champions. Amongst all the series wins, Sourav Ganguly rated the victory in Australia this year as India’s best.

Led by Virat Kohli, India lost the first Test convincingly by eight wickets but won the second Test, drew the third, and won the fourth one. The visitors registered an emphatic three-wicket win on the final day of the fourth game by chasing more than 320 as Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Rishabh Pant made half-centuries of the highest quality.

Sourav Ganguly remarked that their series victory in Australia was the best for him as Australia are hard to beat in their backyard. The Prince of Kolkata noted that with several key players missing, their replacements did incredibly well and feels their consistent gameplay made them deserving to be in the finals.

“I think their [series] win against Australia was the highlight for me. Australia is always a strong team, and beating them in at home was a huge [achievement] by India. With key players missing out, it was huge that their replacements delivered. India has played consistently well and that is why they are in the finals,” Ganguly told Weekly Magazine in an interview.

At this stage, I would rather wait before saying anything: Sourav Ganguly

While many perceive that the World Test Championship should have been the best of three finals, Sourav Ganguly feels it is too early to comment on it. The former Indian skipper lauded the concept of keeping a World Test Championship since the format deserves context. As for arranging more than one finals to determine the champions, Ganguly believes that ICC will look into it and modify it if required.

“It is too early to say. Let this season finish. The ICC will look at a lot of things. At this stage, I would rather wait before saying anything. It is a very good concept for sure. I think Test cricket is the biggest and strongest form of cricket and it should have a final. As far as the one-off Test as a final is concerned, it is the first [edition]. Things will be looked into for the future. The ICC will get feedback from all stakeholders,” he added.
