South Africa have suffered a big injury blow ahead of the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The Proteas are set to miss the services of fast bowler Sisanda Magala for the marquee event in India.

The highly-anticipated World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19. South Africa have announced their 15-member squad for the tournament and Sisanda Magala is a part of the team. However, he looks set to withdraw from the squad due to injury.

Earlier this month, Sisanda Magala made his much-awaited return to action during the ODI series against Australia. Prior to his comeback, he had spent over four months on the sidelines after picking an injury in April while plying his trade for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 32-year-old was named in the T20I as well as the ODI squad for the assignments against Australia. However, he could not play in the T20I series after feeling discomfort in his left knee during training and subsequent scans revealed an infrapatellar tendinopathy. The medical team will continue to manage him ahead of the third T20I on Sunday.

Sisanda Magala failed to recover in time for the first two ODIs too before finally returning to action in the third game. However, the delight of the comeback turned into despair. The right-arm pacer could bowl only four overs on his comeback and has felt pain and discomfort in his knee since.

According to a report from South African news outlet IOL, Sisanda Magala won’t be on the plane to India for the World Cup. The upcoming competition would have been his first-ever World Cup. The report stated that the pacer is still having trouble with his knee and does not have sufficient time to recover for the World Cup.

Sisanda Magala’s injury could open the doors for fast-bowling allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo for the World Cup. The allrounder played against Australia and could be added to the Proteas squad for the World Cup. He was recalled for two ODI’s to cover for Magala against Australia.

South Africa squad for ICC World Cup 2023: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen.
