Some England stars have decided not to return to India for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. Jofra Archer, Jamie Overton, and Sam Curran will miss the remaining matches of this season. But there's good news for some franchises, as Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, and Jacob Bethell are all set to land in India on Wednesday night (May 14) to resume their IPL 2025 commitments.
As reported by Cricbuzz, a top official from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that some players, like Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and others, are coming back, while others have opted out, and this decision has been approved by the players’ respective franchises as well.
Jofra Archer ruled out of IPL 2025 due to an injury
Rajasthan Royals confirmed that Jofra Archer won't return to India for IPL 2025 due to injury, not because the team is out of the playoffs. Archer had "sustained a thumb injury" during RR’s clash against the KKR, and the team is focusing on protecting his fitness.
An RR official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “It is not a case of not being willing because we are out of reckoning for playoffs. He is nurturing an injury, and we are prioritizing his fitness.”
Jofra Archer "sustained a thumb injury" vs KKR so he isn't coming back. However with RR out of contention, why would you want Archer to fly back and play a few inconsequential low stakes game. @rajasthanroyals #IPLUpdates

Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, and others set to return to India for IPL 2025
Jos Buttler, who is part of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025, is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad by Wednesday night. Will Jacks, the Mumbai Indians all-rounder, is also returning and should be available for practice at Wankhede Stadium from Thursday (May 15).
Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone, who plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is reportedly on a flight to Bengaluru. Jacob Bethell is also on his way to India. There is still no update on Phil Salt, RCB star from England, with his return for the remainder of the IPL 2025 status unclear.
On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) confirmed that Sam Curran and Jamie Overton will not return to India, and the team won’t be seeking replacements for the remaining games. With CSK out of the IPL 2025 playoff race, the team decided to wrap up the season with the available players.
England players to miss IPL 2025 Playoffs
Well, Moeen Ali, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has not made a decision yet about his return to India to fulfill his IPL commitments. Former England all-rounder’s father Munir Ali revealed that the cricketer would make a final call within 24 hours.
Notably, the ECB has picked Archer, Bethell, Buttler, Jacks, and Overton in England’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies on May 29, June 1, and June 3. Given their national commitments, these players will miss the IPL 2025 playoffs, as they will have to leave India after the league stage ends on May 27.
The IPL 2025 will restart on May 17 in Bengaluru after a one-week break due to the India-Pakistan conflict. The playoffs are scheduled to begin on May 29, and the final is on June 3—the same days as England’s ODI matches are scheduled against the West Indies.
