IPL 2021 auction witnessed yet another fascinating bidding war between the franchises. The auction took place on February 18 in which eight franchisees participated. Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings spent Rs. 145.30 crores in total to select 57 players into their squad.

Christopher Morris broke all previous records of IPL auctions after he was bought for Rs. 16.25 by Rajasthan Royals. Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Maxwell, who was bought at Rs. 15 crores and Rs. 14.25 crores respectively by Royal Challengers Bangalore, were the next big deals in IPL auction 2021. Apart from these big buys, there were few other deals too which witnessed a heavy amount. These players invited heavy bids for themselves, which appeared as an overpriced amount for them. Here we look at five such players who were overpriced in IPL 2021 auction.

IPL 2021 Auction: 5 Players Who Were Overpriced

Krishnappa Gowtham – Rs. 9.25 Crore

Krishnappa Gowtham arrived at the auction with the least base price of Rs. 20 lakh, however, he was sold for a huge amount of Rs. 9.25 crore to Chennai Super Kings. Initially, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad engaged in intense bidding, rising Krishnappa Gowtham to Rs. 7.50 crore. Chennai Super Kings entered the bid with Rs. 7.75 amount, and eventually picked the all-rounder for Rs. 9.25 crore.

Getting a massive Rs. 9.25 crore for Krishnappa Gowtham from his Rs. 20-lakh base price at the auction seems like an overpriced deal. The right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler Gowtham also do not have amazing stats in IPL. He has played 24 matches in IPL 2018, 2019, and 2020 scoring 186 runs. He has able to grab 13 wickets over the period.

Jhye Richardson – Rs. 14 Crore

Jhye Richardson bagged a deal of Rs. 14 crores from Punjab Kings in the IPL 2021 auction. Such a hefty amount for a debutant surely appears as an overpriced purchase. Australian pacer Jhye Richardson had a base price of Rs. 1.5 crore but a bidding war between Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings made him one of the top buys in IPL 2021 auction.

Jhye Richardson also has very little international exposure playing only 2 Tests, 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for Australia. Taking all these above points into consideration, Jhye Richardson is definitely an overpriced deal in IPL 2021 auction.

Riley Meredith- Rs. 8 Crore

Riley Meredith was another overpriced player in IPL 2021 auction, considering his no experience in the Indian Premier League. Moreover, Riley has no international experience so far and has only played in domestic leagues. Riley Meredith’s auction started with Rs. 40 lakh base price, but Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals’ bidding war for the Australian pacer increased his value to Rs. 8 crores. This is much more price than expected for the 24-yar-old cricketer in IPL 2021 auction.

Shahrukh Khan – Rs. 5.25 Crore

Shahrukh Khan, whose auction started with mere Rs. 20 lakh price, concluded at the surplus amount of Rs. 5.25 crore. A close bidding war between Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings raised Shahrukh’s price to Rs. 5.25 crore.

This comes as a heavy amount for the all-rounder, who has never played an IPL match or international game so far. Shahrukh Khan came to the limelight with his stint in Tamil Nadu Premier League, but such a huge amount for the debutant in an IPL auction is quite surprising.

Dan Christian- Rs. 4.8 Crore

Dan Christian is another name who earned big during IPL 2021 auction. The Australian all-rounder was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 4.8 crore. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders engaged in a nail-biting competition to take Dan Christian on their side. At Rs. 4.8 crore, Christian ultimately became part of Royal Challengers Bangalore, a lot more than his actual base price of Rs. 75 lakh.

The 37-year-old cricketer is quite active in domestic T20 leagues but not in the international circuit. He last played an international game in 2014. Therefore, no one expected that Dan Christian will attract such a big price for himself.
