IPL 2021 Auction: Twitter Reacts After Chris Morris Becomes The Most Expensive Buy In The History Of The IPL
Updated - 18 Feb 2021, 05:38 PM
South African seam-bowling all-rounder Chris Morris has broken all the previously-set records in the IPL auction to become the most expensive buy in the history of the cash-rich league.
Morris, who was released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the IPL 2021 Auction, has been bought by Rajasthan Royals for a staggering amount of Rs 16.25 Crore.
Chris Morris did decently well in IPL 2020 but he was marred with injuries and missed out on a lot of games. Eventually, he was released by RCB. The Proteas all-rounder has listed himself at a base price of Rs 75 Lakh.
The bidding war started with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore going hammer and tongs to avail the services of the South African cricketer.
RCB, who has shelled out Rs 10 Crore in the last IPL auction, backed out from the bidding war after the amount crossed Rs 10 Crore mark, making way for the Rajasthan Royals.
Mumbai Indians backed out of the bidding war after making their final bid at Rs 13 Crore. Punjab Kings joined the party but eventually, it was Rajasthan Royals who racked up his services at Rs 16.25 Crore.
Chris Morris has only trumped Pat Cummins (Rs 15.5 Crore) as far as the highest-paid overseas cricketer is concerned but he has also defeated Yuvraj Singh’s previously held record for being the most expensive buy at the auction table.

What does one make of the big buys so far? 14.25 crore for a player who was released because he couldn't buy a run last season, and 16.25 for a player who missed half of the IPL because of injury and hasn't played a game since the IPL #IPLAuction

Last year Aussie Pat Cummins went for Rs 15.5 crore.
This year Chris Morris Rs 16.25 crore (the most expensive buy ever!)#IPL2021#IPLAuction2021— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) February 18, 2021
Chris Morris for this 16.25 crores tells you the price tag is dictated not by talent but what and who are available. Had it been a full auction he wouldn’t fetch half of this. @IPL #IPL2021Auction
