Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull feels that David Warner was stripped of his captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad due to his comments on teammate Manish Pandey. On Saturday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise made an official announcement that Kane Williamson will lead the team in the rest of IPL 2021. So far, David Warner has led Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2021.
The reason behind David Warner’s removal as skipper is not clear but it may be due to Sunrisers Hyderabad’s poor show in IPL 2021 so far. Out of 6 matches in IPL 2021, Sunrisers Hyderabad have won only 1 game so far. They hold the last spot in IPL 2021 points table after almost half of the tournament has finished. However, Simon Doull feels that there is a different reason for the big decision.
David Warner Has Paid The Price For His Comments: Simon Doull
While speaking to Cricbuzz, Doull spoke about the possible reason for David Warner’s removal as the skipper. Doull feels that Warner was stripped of captaincy due to his comments on Manish Pandey during the previous match. Warner had said that it was not his decision to bench Manish Pandey in the match and blamed the selectors for the call.
“I think there must have been a falling out somewhere along the lines and not with the team, there has to be a falling out with the coaching structure. After what he said in that game about leaving Manish Pandey out, it was not his decision at all, he didn’t want to do it clearly.
‘And basically, you passed the buck, you blamed it on someone else and I think he has paid the price for that,” said Simon Doull.
Doull also feels that Sunrisers Hyderabad’s poor performance in IPL 2021 is the result of the ineffective relationship between leaders of the team.
“That dynamic… you sack a coach, Tom Moody, you employ Trevor Bayliss and then you bring Tom Moody back to oversee your cricket. I don’t know how that relationship can possibly work. And I wonder whether one [win] in 5 (6) is the direct result of that relationship not working… And the press release suggests that he [David Warner] won’t even play now that’s even more strange!” Simon Doull added.
David Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first IPL title in IPL 2016. In IPL 2015, IPL 2017, and IPL 2019, Warner was the leading run-scorer of the tournament and won the orange cap. In IPL 2018, Kane Williamson had led the team in Warner’s absence. Kane Williamson led the team to the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad will next face Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 on May 2 (Sunday).
