Former New Zealand cricketer Daniel Vettori has said that MS Dhoni’s assessment of the pitch should always be backed. Vettori’s words came after MS Dhoni’s prediction about the pitch in the IPL 2021 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad came out to be true. Chennai Super Kings defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday.

David Warner opted to bat first after winning the toss. However, MS Dhoni mentioned during the toss that he would have anyway chosen to bowl first as he believes the wicket is a bit tacky and dew will come later to help the team batting second.

MS Dhoni’s assessment was perhaps right since Sunrisers Hyderabad faced issues while batting first. On the other hand, batting seemed quite easy for Chennai Super Kings who managed to chase 172 runs in just 18.3 overs.

Should Back MS Dhoni’s Assessment, Says Daniel Vettori

When ESPNCricinfo asked Daniel Vettori if MS Dhoni judged the pitch well against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the New Zealand spinner said that CSK’s skipper assessments should always be backed.

“Should back Dhoni’s assessment no matter what, I think that’s what we’ve learned from all of this,” Vettori said.

Vettori also said that CSK bowlers bowled well and the team used their resources pretty well against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“I think Sam Curran bowled well upfront I think he got the important wicket of Jonny Bairstow and because of the way SRH are set up when they lose one of their opening batters, they can at times look a bit tentative.

“We saw how Warner just kept hitting fielders and combined with some good bowling from CSK. They used their resources pretty well,” Daniel Vettori further said.

Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 171-3 while batting first. David Warner (57) and Manish Pandey (61) smashed half-centuries. However, the chase looked like a piece of cake for Chennai Super Kings. CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (75) and Faf du Plessis (56) smashed the fifties and managed a 129-run stand for the opening wicket. CSK managed to win the match in 18.3 overs by 7 wickets.

Chennai Super Kings moved to the top spot in IPL 2021 points table with 5 wins in 6 games. CSK have won 5 games in a row after losing their opening match to Delhi Capitals. Chennai Super Kings will next face Mumbai Indian on May 1.
