The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ticked almost all the boxes in the first leg of the discontinuous IPL 2021. They won their first four games in a row, and have hovered around the top of the table for the entire duration.

Going into the second phase of the league, RCB sits in third place, with five wins out of seven games. They are only behind 3-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Delhi Capitals (DC). While DC is at the top with six wins out of eight, CSK showcases the same stats as RCB but is ahead based on its superior net run rate.

In-form destructive middle-order pair Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers have kept the boat floating despite an average season for skipper Virat Kohli at the top. He hasn’t looked anywhere close to his fluent self and that is a major cause of concern for the franchise.

Devdutt Padikkal, however, has been explosive so far after a few complaints about his strike in the 2020 season. He already has a century to his name, coming against a depleted Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals side.

RCB signed three new replacements on August 21, Saturday, which gives them a major boost going into the second leg. All-rounders Wanindu Hasaranga and Tim David provide much-needed balance in the middle-order and also are wicket-taking options, especially the Lankan leggie.

Dushmantha Chameera was also picked up by RCB, and he will replace New Zealander, Finn Allen, who has international commitments to fulfill. The bowling attack looks very potent with Mohammad Siraj and Harshal leading the way. The latter is also the purple cap holder for the season, having picked up a staggering 17 wickets in seven matches.

The team has also undergone changes in the management. Simon Katich, the head coach, took the decision to step down owing to personal reasons. The director of operations at RCB, Mike Hesson, will take over the reins until the end of the season.
