Other than quick wicket-keeping, blistering batting, and effective leadership, MS Dhoni has one more quality that makes him one of the greatest cricketers in the world. It is his match-reading skills. One fine example of this came during Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals match in IPL 2021, when MS Dhoni correctly predicted that a dry ball will turn before Jos Buttler lost his wicket.
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was impressed with MS Dhoni’s ability to understand the game situations very well. While chasing a target of 189, Jos Buttler was playing brilliantly. In the 10th over, he smashed Ravindra Jadeja for a six.
As a result, a new dry ball replaced the earlier ball that went far into the stands. MS Dhoni gave the ball to Jadeja in the 12th over.
Before the very first delivery of the over, MS Dhoni was heard saying that a dry ball will turn. On the very next ball, Jadeja bowled Jos Buttler with a brilliant spin delivery. The ball spun against Buttler’s bat and hit the stumps. Have a look at the video of the incident below.

Brilliant Captaincy From MS Dhoni: Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar was very impressed with MS Dhoni’s successful prediction before Jos Buttler’s dismissal. While speaking to Star Sports, he said that MS Dhoni showed brilliant captaincy in the game.
“The bowling changes he made (was brilliant). The moment the ball was changed after Jos Buttler hit that six and a dry ball came, he said it in Hindi to Jadeja that the next ball will turn and it did turn.
“Jos Buttler got out and then he gave the ball to Moeen Ali. A dry ball for a spinner… Again, brilliant captaincy from Dhoni,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar also said that he was impressed over how MS Dhoni was spot on with everything in the match.
“Very impressed. In his 200th match as captain of CSK, he was spot on with just about everything. The bowling changes, the field placements.
“Jadeja took 4 catches but apart from that, look at the number of boundaries he saved and that is so important, to keep the right fielders in the right position and Dhoni had that,” Sunil Gavaskar added.
Chennai Super Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by 45 runs to attain 2nd spot in the points table. Batting first, CSK scored 188-9. Faf du Plessis (33), Moeen Ali (26), and Ambati Rayudu (27) played some notable knocks in the match for Chennai Super Kings.
While bowling, Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja gave a big blow to Rajasthan Royals. Ali bagged 3 wickets while Jadeja scalped 2 wickets along with 4 catches. Sam Curran also managed to pick 2 wickets. CSK limited Rajasthan Royals to 143-9 in 20 overs in the end.
