The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started talks with regard to the rules of retaining players in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction. A while ago, the board had revealed that the 15th edition of the league will see two new teams get added into the fray.

Prior to the resumption of IPL 2021, the BCCI has already spoken with IPL officials to decide how to go ahead with their new plans. According to Cricbuzz, a meeting was scheduled in Delhi where the top brass discussed matters regarding the sale of new teams and retention policies.

The apex board has almost finished the legal work for the tender document that’s necessary for the sale of the two new teams. Although the teams haven’t been decided as of now, there have been a lot of speculations that Ahmedabad is one of the front-runners to occupy a slot.

BCCI has likely decided to allow retention of players

A few weeks ago, it was said that teams would be allowed to keep 3 Indians and 1 foreign player or 2 Indians and 2 foreign players. However, since new teams are coming in, arguments were made stating it would be unfair to them if they didn’t have access to the best players. At the meeting in Delhi however, BCCI has most likely decided to allow franchisees to retain players.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s believed that the eight IPL franchises will be allowed to keep as many as three players. In previous auctions, the franchises were allowed to use the Right-to-match (RTM) card through which they were allowed to match the auction price of the players.
